Reincarnated And It Feels So Good

Last night, Pete and I went out for sushi with our friends, Lauren and Paul. The topic of reincarnation came up. Lauren has a friend who believes he was a member of the Japanese Royal Court in another life. Mysteriously enough, he is able to speak fluent Japanese and he adores Japanese food, culture, art, etc. Of course, this person seems to know many details of his previous life which, as it turns out, was far more fascinating than the life he currently leads. Don't get me wrong, his life in the here and now isn't too terrible. He drives a bus for the city and makes a decent living but this got me thinking quite a bit about the whole reincarnation thing and how it works.

Over the years, I've met lots of people who believe in reincarnation. Back in college, I knew a guy who swore he was a gazelle before he was reborn as a chain smoking, malt liquor drinking, crusty, punk rocker. I never saw this guy do anything I would remotely consider graceful or gazelle-like in the four or five years I knew him. He never traveled outside of the Boston city limits and the only tie he seemed to have to the animal kingdom would be the occasional leopard print dye job he sported on top of his cropped head. I guess he had enough of running and leaping and being a sleek and muscular creature in his previous life to last him through his current one.

I also knew a woman who swore she had lived as a much sought-after princess back in England during Medieval Times. Every Halloween she would don a ridiculous costume of linen and velvet which revealed much cleavage. I always thought she looked like the St. Paulies Girl but she insisted she was a fair maiden and that "she could feel it in her bones." Wearing this garb was "like coming home." I suppose it was better than the life that she was currently living where she had to work two jobs (one as a waitress at a Denny's and one as a clerk at Urban Outfitters) just to get by.

I have even know people who believed they experienced great tragedies in another life, people who were enslaved or victimized. I know people who believe they were persecuted for pursuing personal freedoms or speaking out against injustice. The one thing all these people hold in common is that the lives they led prior to their current life were far more exciting than the ones they are living right now. I have posed questions to these people like "what did you do that made you fall so far from grace?" I mean, coming back as a gas station attendant after being a member of Nobility or an Overlord or even a soaring eagle has got to be a bummer. You must really have to screw up to take that big of a step down. Seriously, let's think about it. Pretend for a moment that you were the Queen of England in your last life. You didn't do the greatest job but you didn't get the country blown into oblivion either. What would be the logical next life for you? I'd say you'd simply be demoted to occupying her shoes, don't you agree? I can't imagine being relegated to Joe Smith, Telemarketer Of American Vinyl Siding, after having a life so regal.

After thinking about all of this I have decided that I too walked the earth as a different person. I was Mary Ellen Brown, a receptionist for Acme Construction Inc. in fabulous Sour Lake, Texas (you know, the Gateway to the Great Thicket), where I resided in a double-wide, and ate Vienna sausages out of a can. I did such a good job in that life that I was promoted to Mrs-Roboto, Communications Specialist at a small nonprofit in Seattle, WA, where I occupy a small home(non-mobile) but due to some small indiscretion in Texas, still have to drive a pickup truck. Luckily, the canned meat has been replaced with fresh smoked salmon. My hope is that if I live this life in a decent manner, I can work my way up to marrying me some money in my next life and sitting around doing nothing at all. I just can't wait!
