My Youthful Innocence Lives On
The Set Up:
My parents and Pete's parents (though
all very sweet people) can be a bit crass at times. They were all raised in
blue collar-type families and were the first of their clans to go to college.
They were all born in East coast cities where they continue to live to this
day. My parents move quickly, the way New Yorkers do and are suspicious of any
unnecessary kindness. Pete's parents are New England natives who once served
as Boston's Finest. Yes, both of them were cops. One of my mother-in-laws favorite
sayings is "Shit in one hand and wish in the other and see which one gets
full first." Whenever the kids said "I wish I had a bike" or
"I wish it was sunny out," that was her response. So, yes they are
as a whole a charming group.
The Scenario:
This morning Pete awoke and began making home fries for breakfast. I asked
him what his game plan for the day was. He began to list off things - take Desmond
to the park, disassemble major appliances, visit the city dump, etc. I answered
in a high pitch voice "I see, said the blind man...." Then I explained
that when I was a kid my dad would say that when ever I stated a fact to him.
It was a cute little game we played, he would act like I told him the secret
to eternal youth and exclaim "I see said the blind man." I thought
it was pure comedic genius.
The Bursting of the Bubble:
"My dad used to say that too," Pete told me. "You know there
is more to it, right?"
More to it? I had no idea.
"It goes like this," he said.....
"I see,said the blind man,
as he pissed into the wind,
It's all coming back to me now."
So much for wholesome childhood memories.
And in honor of my grandfather, who I miss everyday of my life, another childhood
(?!) nursery rhyme:
The boy stood on the burning deck,
His feet were full of blisters,
He tore his pants on a rusty nail,
And now he wears his sisters
