Nicaragua and Home Improvements

On Friday night after doing quite a bit of running around, Pete and I settled into one of our local watering holes for drinks. Conversation alternated between what to do for Pete's upcoming birthday and what we should do about our housing situation.

The first question was easily enough answered. We have a tradition of taking trips for birthdays and Pete had been leaning towards a quick jaunt to La Paz. We have plenty of airline miles and Mexico is fairly close by. I wouldn't have to miss classes, we could just go for five days but then in the middle of this discussion it hit me. I need a real vacation, like a whole seven days. School, work, two volunteer jobs....what was I thinking? Vacationing over Christmas with ones parents is not necessarily relaxing especially since we all have such different ideas of fun. My parents and my sister are cruise ship/ club med/ noisy casinos in the overdeveloped Caribbean people, Pete and I are not. In fact, I'd choose working in a coal mine over going on a Carnival Cruise any day. Anyway back to vacation - school be damned. I need a break. I am tired, really tired and I'm willing to miss a little class to revive my spirit. Pete has been talking about Nicaragua for some time now and so we settled on a holiday in San Juan del Sur. Nicaragua has the wildlife we love (hello Howler Monkeys), the surf is strong, and it has yet to be overdeveloped. Now if only I can drop my extra winter insulation in the next 20 days.....oh cheese why have you forsaken me?

Chat two could politely be called "pick a road and drive on it." After looking at dozens upon dozens of homes in our area it seems we are no closer to finding a perfect place which brings us back to the "how can we perfect the home we have" conversation. I will start by saying Pete and I moved into our home at the perfect time. A few months after, the area exploded. What was once a quaint Scandinavian enclave became the hot spot to buy. Wine bars and boutiques began popping up here and there. Older craftsman style homes were bulldozed and four or five townhomes would pop up in their place like mushrooms after the rain. Sure, Pete and I lost our territorial view of the Ridge to one of these monsters but we can surround our yard in bamboo and create a little oasis. Let's face it, I still love the area. I adore the proximity to everything. We are both pleased that our mortgage payment is totally manageable. So we are going to pick the home improvement route and drive on that road. I'm sure they'll be bumps and that you'll hear all about them but we think this is our best choice.

In less exciting and somewhat depressing news, Pete is on his second business trip in two weeks. Ugh, I hate business trips and I wish he was home.
